Oh, those were the times.

This post exists because sometimes wonderful Twitter conversations just get a bit out of hand. Somehow
not_a_rummba ,
octoberorange and me ended up talking about the amazing music that was made in the '90s and when I said I could make a playlist of all the great songs, I seem to have meant that. This is for Farhana because she convinced me to do this (not that I really needed that, but still) and for Jess who reminded me of lots of good bands and songs I might have otherwise forgotten. Thank you girls. This is also for everyone who loves the incredible music made in the '90s. Enjoy!

(The songs are in no specific order, so you can listen to them however you like.)
Muse - Sunburn
She burns like the sun, and I can't look away
She'll burn our horizons, make no mistakes
The Smashing Pumpkins - Today
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever really known
Supergrass - Caught By The Fuzz
We'll make it hard for you my son, so tell us what you know.
We'll make you wish you'd stayed at home tonight,
The Cardigans - Erase/Rewind
I've changed my mind
So where did you see me go
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
When I am king, you will be first against the wall
with your opinion which is of no consequence at all
Alice In Chains - Would?
Drifting body, its sole exertion.
Flying, not yet quite the notion.
Nirvana - Come As You Are
And I swear that I don't have a gun
No, I don't have a gun
Foo Fighters - Hey, Johnny Park!
Your eyes still remind me of
Angels that hover above
Jeff Buckley - Last Goodbye
Why can't we overcome this wall?
Baby, maybe it's just because I didn't know you at all.
Faith No More - Midlife Crisis
I cannot stop giving in
I'm thirty-something
Placebo - 36 Degrees
We were tight,
But it falls apart as silver turns to blue.
Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
Kool thing walkin' like a panther
Come on and give me an answer
Temple Of The Dog - Pushin' Forward Back
Fallen heroes feed the ground
I started pushin' forward back
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God
Beastie Boys - Intergalactic
From the family tree of old school hip hop
Kick off your shoes and relax your socks
Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days
And what you wanted to be yours
Has made it mine
Pearl Jam - Spin The Black Circle
Well here it comes...I touch the plane...
Turn me up...won't turn you away...
Hole - Doll Parts
I love him so much it just turns to hate
I fake it so real, I am beyond fake
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away
Unimpressed by material excess
Love is free love me say hell yes
Garbage - I Think I'm Paranoid
Heaven knows what a girl can do
Heaven knows what you've got to prove
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
And I feel, so much depends on the weather
So is it raining in your bedroom?
Veruca Salt - Seether
Keep her down, boiling water,
Keep her down, what a lovely daughter.
Cranberries - Zombie
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?
Green Day - Basket Case
Do you have the time, To listen to me whine,
About nothing and everything all at once?
Note: This is a very subjective list here, everyone has their own favourites. This is also what goes as "grunge/alternative/rock with a twist" mix in my folders and if I have time and people remind me of good songs, it could be likely that one day there will also be a '90s dance/pop mix. Until that, enjoy listening to these. ♥

Date: 25 Feb 2011 01:29 am (UTC)okay, um. first of all, a 90's mix is always very much appreciated, so hail to the extremely brilliant+out-of-hands twitter conversation! and then, honestly jen. i can't believe your choices. I WOULD'VE PICKED 80% OF THOSE SONGS, TOO. i swear.
what i would've changed? not much:
1. i would've chosen learn to fly instead of hey, johnny park!, just because it's a lot more mainstream;
2. i'd be deadly tied between come as you are and smells like teen spirit;
3. black hole sun instead of fell on black days;
4. celebrity skin instead of doll parts (all of the above for the same reason - i just feel like mainstream songs are more appropriate for a mixtape like this? LOL idk);
5. i'd have picked RATM (probably, killing in the name of) instead of veruca salt, since i don't know them;
6. deftones (be quite and drive (far away)) and/or incubus (drive) instead of temple of the dog;
7. i would've also included pj harvey (rid of me or down by the water) just because i love her to bits and guns n'roses (november rain) because i have far too many good memories connected to that song. :)
hahah that's it! but yeah, your mixtape is amazing as it is and i'm going to download it and listen to it right now because you made me all nostalgic now and i haven't listened to some of those songs in real ages.
i think that once you have some time to spare again, we shall have a conversation about a pop/dance 90's mix. oh yes, we totally should. :)

Date: 25 Feb 2011 01:14 pm (UTC)Haha, I love it that people appreciate this. I guess I should thank Radiohead, it all started when I got sick of people raving about the new album. xD Haha, well I (and the people helping me) did pick some pretty obvious ones.
1. Ah yeah, I was thinking quite a while between those two, but since I think The Colour And The Shape is a better album than Nothing Left To Lose I wanted a song from that one.
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit didn't make it because every single person on Earth knows it and it's way too popular for these. They have better songs than that imo.
3. Again, wanted to avoid the most obvious one even if Black Hole Sun is amazing.
4. LMAO I would have wanted Celebrity Skin actually, but I didn't have it on my iTunes and at that point I was too tired to download anything new. But agree, it would have been better.
5. *hitting my head against the wall* I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT RATM. Ashamed forever.
6. Could have included Incubus, definitely. But Temple of the Dog deserves it spot because this started as a grunge mix.
7. Hah, I was actually thinking about Guns N' Roses but somehow I always associate it more with the 80s even though I know they made albums in the 90s too. Yeah, I don't know either.
Thank you, I had so much fun making it. And I think it made quite a few people nostalgic, I guess that was part why I made it.
Oh we definitely need to have a chat about it. Would be awesome. We'll find time for it at some point, we have to. :)
